Humans (Homo sapiens) are a primate species inhabiting the mortal world. They are usually not able to use magic. A minority of humans can use magic to a varying extent; they are called practitioners as a general term, with the more powerful ones being called sorcerers. Sorcerers who have been trained by the White Council are considered wizards.
Humans can produce offspring with various non-human creatures. Offspring of a human and a faerie are called changelings, those with demons are called scions. In one way or another most supernatural creatures need humanity as a food source or to fuel some other primal drive. An interesting statistical fact is that the percentage of missing persons amongst the human populace almost mirrors the percentage of animals that a herd loses to predators. Amongst the supernatural nations, involving mortals in conflict is akin to using the atomic bomb as when humanity is riled up it usually involves the indiscriminate use of pitchforks and torches.
The “Clued In”
Humans who can use magic, who have had a brush with the supernatural world, or are one of the select People of Faith are considered by those in the supernatural community as being “clued in.” With knowledge comes power, but in this case ignorance is a kind of a bliss, typically the clued in are not aligned with any kind of supernatural power and are not protected much by the Accords, this can make them easy targets for more predatory creatures.
Clued in mortals are protected in some measures by the White Council and, against certain threats, the Faith; however they have formed some of their own groups to combat the monsters who prey on them. These groups usually take the form of some black cat investigations in various police departments or some enterprising criminal organization. Larger organizations have also been created by the clued in such as the Order of the Jade Serpent, the Order of St Giles, Paranet, and Venatori Umbrorum in an effort to protect themselves.
